RESOLUTE™ absolute optical encoder - BiSS C (unidirectional) protocol

BiSS C is an open-source protocol available on a variety of industry-standard drives, controllers and counter cards; offering high-speed (up to 10 MHz data rate), inherent safety and avoids the pitfalls of being locked into a single supplier!

BiSS interface encoder serial communications protocol logoRenishaw supports BiSS® C (unidirectional) open protocol for absolute encoders. BiSS is a high-speed serial protocol, perfect for dynamic axes that require high acceleration, silky-smooth velocity control, excellent bi-directional repeatability and rock-solid positional stability.

RESOLUTE with BiSS is available in both linear and rotary (angle) encoder versions, compatible with a wide range of industry-standard controllers, drives, DROs and PC counter cards.

Proprietary protocol options for RESOLUTE absolute encoders are also available

RESOLUTE absolute linear encoders with BiSS

  • Rugged stainless steel FASTRACK™ RTLA track-mounted tape scale with ±5 µm/m accuracy, lengths up to 10 m and featuring quick and easy installation / scale replacement.
  • Tough RSLA stainless steel spars with ±4 µm total accuracy over an entire 5 m length, perfect for long axes where metrology cannot be compromised. For lengths up to 10 m, please contact your local Renishaw representative.
  • Ultra-high accuracy RELA Invar spar scales with guaranteed accuracy better than ±1 µm on lengths up 1130 mm, certified to International Standards.

The maximum scale length is determined by the readhead resolution multiplied by the number of position bits in the serial word. For RESOLUTE readheads with fine resolution and short word length, the maximum scale length will be limited accordingly. Conversely, coarser resolutions or longer word lengths enable the use of longer scale lengths.

RESOLUTE with BiSS C (unidirectional) protocol has two options for the position word length; 32 bits and 26 bits. The 32 bit position word facilitates longer lengths that can be a significant benefit, especially at fine resolutions. For 5 nm and 50 nm resolution readheads with a 32 bit position word, it is possible to use the full 10 metre scale length offered by RTLA and RSLA.

RESOLUTE absolute rotary (angle) encoders with BiSS

Monolithic stainless steel RESA rings with high-precision graduations marked directly onto the periphery, also featuring large internal diameters for easy integration. Unique taper mount enables quick installation and easy adjustment to compensate eccentricity of the mounting shaft.

Ultra-high accuracy REXA rings with thicker cross-section, guaranteed to achieve ±1 arc second total installed accuracy with dual readheads*.
