All kinds of different products, equipment and machines depend on electronic engineering for their control and operation.

What is electronic engineering?

Electronic engineering is used to control and operate all kinds of different products, equipment and machines. It's inside our consumer electronics, such as smart phones, MP3 players and laptops. It's in manufacturing systems, robots and satellites. It's in cars, planes and medical equipment. Our lives rely on it.

In simple terms, electronic engineering uses a vast range of miniature electronic components to design electronic circuits. These circuits decide how a gadget, a machine, or a whole system, is going to operate when we press its keyboard, buttons or screen, or it receives an external signal from the outside world.

There is of course much more to it than that, and electronics is one of the most rapidly advancing areas of engineering. Think internet, WiFi, renewable energy, virtual reality, electric cars, space travel – whatever's coming next will need creative, problem-solving electronic engineers.
