What components do I need to build a complete measurement system?

A complete system requires an RLU laser unit, one or two detector heads, optical fibres, detector cables, quadrature output cables, and suitable target optics. Depending on the required position output, an interpolator or other interface may also be needed.

What should I use to clean the optics on my laser encoder system?

What should I use to clean the optical fibre on my next-generation laser encoder system?

You should use Renishaw's specialist optical fibre cleaning materials (RLE-RLU-FCS) or equivalents.

What warranty is my laser encoder product supplied with?

As standard all new laser encoder products are supplied with a 2-year warranty.

How do I return a product to Renishaw?

Please contact your local Renishaw representative to confirm the correct shipping address for your region. In addition, we ask that:

  • Products are packaged safely and securely to prevent possible damage in transport, using the original Renishaw packaging, if available.
  • Where applicable, inclusion of signed de-contamination forms.

An advice slip is included, detailing:

  • The return address and a contact email / telephone number
  • The reason for the return, and
  • Any relevant correspondence that you may already had with Renishaw

If an RMA (Return Merchandise Authorisation) has been supplied, the number is written on the box and/or on the paperwork.

Does Renishaw offer Repair by Exchange (RBE) for laser encoders?

Renishaw offers a full range of service options to ensure ongoing performance and allowing you to comply with quality assurance. All laser encoder repairs are carried out by our skilled technicians at our Service Centre. In addition to standard repairs, Repair by Exchange (RBE) units are also available for several items as a cost effective repair option.

Before returning any units for repair or replacement, please contact the your local Renishaw representative. To minimise disruption to your operations, where possible, we will always try to resolve any issues by phone or email first, before deciding that the unit needs returning to Renishaw.

RLE laser encoder systems

I have an existing RLE10 or RLE20 laser encoder system in my application. How can I replace it with an RLE100, RLE200, or RLE300 laser encoder systems?

The mounting arrangements used in RLE10 and RLE20 laser encoder systems and position signal formats are retained in RLE100, RLE200, and RLE300 laser encoder systems. Adaptor accessories are available for legacy connections. The laser unit, detector heads and cables must be replaced together.

What is the highest resolution that can be achieved with an RLE system?

When combining the RLE laser interferometer encoder with the RPI30, it is possible to achieve a resolution of 38.6 picometers.

How can I measure multiple degrees of freedom?

Multiple detector heads can be combined to measure linear and angular displacement. Angular measurements can be made using a differential detector head or two plane mirror detector heads. RMAP multi-axis periscopes provide a compact way to measure linear position, pitch and yaw using a common mirror.

How can I get position data from the laser encoder system?

The laser unit outputs analogue quadrature signals, which can be connected to an external interpolator such as the RPI30. When used with the RPI30, position resolutions down to 38.6 pm can be achieved. Alternatively, digital quadrature output can be enabled, with a configurable resolution from approximately 0.3 nm to 20 µm.

What mirrors do Renishaw recommend for use with its RLE laser encoder systems?

Renishaw offers a range of mirrors and optical assemblies optimised for RLE systems. Mirrors sourced from other suppliers should meet the requirements specified in the data sheet. Contact your local Renishaw representative for advice on selecting the most suitable mirror for your application.

Are Renishaw's laser encoder systems RoHS compliant?

Renishaw laser encoder products are RoHS compliant since June 2017. The corresponding declarations of conformity (DOC) can be found on our product quality and conformance page.
